The FA Experience: Sandra’s University Job Success
Sandra came to me after having trouble finding success finding a position over a six-month job search. She had previously been in a job that paid the bills but wasn’t aligned with her career goals or her educational background (she has four degrees), and wanted something better. I worked closely with her to put more emphasis in her resume/CV on her transferable skills and used my knowledge of post-secondary HR, and she successfully got a job at a major Canadian university.
How did you find Focused Ambition?
I found Focused Ambition through Googling some help in career counseling.
What was the process like?
The process was very efficient and Anna was able to really suss out my plan-of-action after the complimentary 15 mins consultation – which was extremely motivating. She designed a practical approach for moving forward (e.g., resume writing overhaul, identifying top 10 employers, creating spreadsheet of job application submissions).
Anna is naturally fluent and comfortable working on a multitude of communication platforms (e.g., text, email, Skype, Google Docs, Google Hangouts). She was very accessible at all times and this made the process of finding a job less stressful because I didn’t always “feel alone.”
How could others benefit from FA help?
The job market is rapidly changing. To be blunt, it’s just ’not what it was.’ It was a hard pill to swallow when I realized that I had to pay to get the extra help and edge required to get me hired. When I had several degrees and was rejected from everywhere I was applying, it was a demeaning experience. However, Anna has the awareness of this common predicament which made her extremely effective. She has the current expertise in human resources that allows your cover letter/resume to be noticed among hundreds of candidates.
After seeing two other career counselors prior to working with Focused Ambition, Anna stood out for her expertise in the current struggles that many over-educated Millennials are facing with an over-saturated job market. She has the current knowledge and vision that allows your cover letter/resume to be noticed among hundreds of candidates. Anna’s ability to employ a variety of web-based programs (e.g., Google Docs) to share and communicate resume changes was also excellent.
What were you most surprised?
How fast and prompt you get help. These days, during the process of finding a job, updating your resume and submitting applications, you require ongoing assistance that goes beyond one-hour weekly consultations which was the case with my previous career counselors. Job postings can go up and down in one day, you can get offers that expire within a day and absolutely need immediate help for those situations.
Anna’s fast and prompt replies were a great surprise but were essential for me to find success and I believe this was fundamental to my success – and keeping me motivated.
Secondly, I was surprised at how much she could motivate me. Job hunting has always been a sore spot for me and my professional confidence was low prior to meeting her. However, Anna handled it wonderfully and invested her energy into keeping me motivated, develop the confidence to move forward and find success despite setbacks I experienced in the past. Because she is very knowledgeable about the various processes that are involved in recruitment, interviewing, hiring and salary negotiations, I would absolutely work with her again (even though I hope not to because I love my job so much!).
